Generalities

The INGV group of Operational Oceanography of Bologna mainly works on the Adriatic and Mediterranean nowcasting/forecasting activities ranging from real time data analysis to assimilation techniques development and forecast assessment.ù In particular its areas of active research are:

  • The production and dissemination of daily ten-day Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea forecasts.
  • The study of the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea dynamics with numerical models.
  • The development of coupled marine ecological models for studies of short-term forecasts and of the impacts of the climatic change on the ecosystems.
  • The development of operational applications (i.e. oil spill forecasting system, rapid environmental assessment techniques)
In the framework of Operational Oceanography INGV is being and has been involved in many European Union, ESA and Italian international Projects

Main Role in ADRICOSM-STAR

INGV is responsible for WP4: “Calibration/validation of hydrological, river basin and oceanographic numerical models”, and will thus coordinate the implementation, calibration and validation of all the numerical models involved in the Project: hydrological, hydraulic (urban and non urban) and oceanographic. In particular INGV will be directly involved in:

  • Upgrading the ADRICOSM FORECASTING SYSTEM to a daily cycle
  • Upgrading the oceanographic general circulation model with the tidal forcings introduced at tho open boundaries.
  • Introducing a sediment trasport module in the OGCM, and investigating the impact of climate changes on the sediment transport dynamics.
  • Coupling the OGCM with a wave model (SWAN). This is a very important issue to investigate the wave-current interaction, in particular in the framework of sediment transport. The three models (Waves, currents, sediment transport) will be, in the end, all coupled together.
  • Implementing two very high resolution models (500-1000 meters of horizontal resolution), in the northern and in the southern Bojana coastal strip, nested in the AREG model.
